Classroom Innovations Through Lesson Study is an APEC Education Network (EDNET) project that aims to improve the quality of education in Mathematics through the use of Lesson Study.  The goals of the project are to:

  • Share the approaches of Lesson Study for the method of the improving quality of education in general;
  • collect and share videos and lesson plans demonstrating good practices in mathematics;
  • develop collaborative network on Lesson Study among member economies; and
  • use Lesson Study approaches to develop innovative teaching practices in multiple areas, including:
    • Mathematical Thinking
    • Mathematical Communication
    • Evaluation
    • Generalization

Masami Isoda & Shizumi Shimizu (University of Tsukuba, Japan) and Maitree Inprasitha and Suladda Loipha (Kohn Kaen University, Thailand) are Project Overseers. Akihiko Takahashi (DePaul University, U.S.) directs the Lesson Study Wiki Pilot Project Taskforce.

Project Products and Highlights

Key products include lesson plans and videos from APEC economies, including many economies whose students score highest on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). Throughout the life of the project, several papers and videos have been produced and presented at the conferences.  Select examples are provided below.

As part of this project, three conferences have been held by APEC member economies to discuss important Lesson Study innovation topics such as mathematics and mathematical thinking, communication, evaluation, and generalization.
